Renjo La is often cited by Khumbu veterans as offering the single best mountain panorama of any pass in the region — a claim worth taking seriously given the competition. The trek combines the standard approach to the Gokyo Lakes with a crossing of this 5,360m pass, descending into the quieter Bhote Koshi valley on Nepal’s western Khumbu border.
Because Renjo La is approached from the Gokyo side (rather than as a connector between Gokyo and the Everest Base Camp trail, as it’s often used on the Three Passes route), this version of the trek stays comparatively less crowded throughout, passing through Thame — a historic Sherpa village and birthplace of several famous Everest climbers — on the way back down.
The pass itself is non-technical but exposed and can hold snow well into the trekking season, so appropriate winter gear and a guide familiar with current conditions are essential. At 5,360m, prior acclimatisation through Namche and Gokyo is built into the itinerary before the crossing.
