Cho La is the pass that links the Khumbu’s two marquee destinations — Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes — into a single itinerary, without the additional length and difficulty of the full Three Passes route. The crossing itself involves a short but genuine glacier traverse, generally requiring microspikes and trekking poles rather than technical climbing gear, though conditions vary year to year.
The itinerary follows the standard Base Camp route as far as Gorak Shep and Kala Patthar, then turns toward Dzongla to position for the Cho La crossing, dropping into the Gokyo valley on the far side for a second set of views entirely — the turquoise lakes and Gokyo Ri’s own summit panorama.
For trekkers who want to see both of the Khumbu’s headline destinations on one trip but don’t want the full three-pass commitment, Cho La strikes a good balance: a fourteen-day itinerary, one technical pass crossing, and two of the region’s best viewpoints.
