For trekkers who’ve done Everest Base Camp and want the complete Khumbu experience, the Three Passes trek combines nearly everything the region offers into one demanding, 18-day circuit: both Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes, linked by three high glacier passes — Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La — each requiring a full day’s crossing over often icy, technical terrain.
This is meaningfully harder than either Base Camp or Gokyo alone, with sustained time above 5,000m and three consecutive pass crossings that demand solid acclimatisation and genuine trekking fitness. The reward is unmatched: both of the Khumbu’s signature viewpoints (Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri), the full base camp experience, and a far more complete picture of the region’s geography than either shorter trek provides on its own.
Given the altitude and technical demands of the passes (particularly Cho La’s glacier crossing), this trek is recommended only for trekkers with prior high-altitude experience, ideally including at least one previous trek above 5,000m.
