Langtang holds a special place in Nepal’s trekking landscape: at around 7–8 hours’ drive from Kathmandu, it’s the closest major Himalayan trekking region to the capital, making it possible to be on a genuine high-altitude trail the same day you leave the city. The main valley trek follows the Langtang Khola upstream through forest and glacial moraine to Kyanjin Gompa, with views of Langtang Lirung dominating the skyline throughout.
The region was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake, which destroyed the village of Langtang itself in a massive landslide; the trail and villages have since been rebuilt, and trekking here today also supports the local Tamang communities still recovering economically. A short distance east, the sacred lake of Gosaikunda and the gentler Helambu trek round out the region’s trekking options.
Trekking season runs March–May and September–November, though Langtang is trekkable outside monsoon in most months given its relatively lower average altitude compared to Khumbu or Annapurna’s high passes. A Langtang National Park permit and TIMS card are required.
