Chandratal — “Moon Lake” — is named for its crescent shape, set within the high-altitude cold desert of the Spiti Valley at 4,300m. Unlike most entries on this list, the trek to it is genuinely short and easy; most of the elevation is gained by road, with only a brief final walk needed to reach the lake shore, making Chandratal one of the most accessible 4,000m-plus destinations in the Indian Himalaya.
That accessibility doesn’t diminish the scenery. The lake’s colour shifts through the day — from a deep, near-black blue at dawn to bright turquoise by midday — set against the barren, wind-carved landscape typical of Spiti, with the Chandrabhaga range visible to the south.
Because of its ease and photogenic reputation, Chandratal is frequently paired with the Hampta Pass trek as a natural extension, or visited independently as part of a longer Spiti Valley road trip from Kaza or Manali.
