Kalsubai is the default answer to “where should I trek this weekend” for much of Mumbai and Pune, and its status as Maharashtra’s highest point — at a modest 1,646m — makes it a satisfying summit to tick off without requiring more than a day or two away from the city. The final stretch of trail uses a series of iron ladders bolted onto the steeper rock sections, adding a bit of scramble-style adventure to what’s otherwise a straightforward climb.
At the top, a small temple dedicated to the goddess Kalsubai marks the summit, and on a clear day — most reliably during the post-monsoon and winter months from October through February — the view opens onto a wide sweep of the Sahyadri plateau and surrounding hill forts.
Because it’s short, close to two major cities, and doesn’t require camping gear beyond a headlamp for a pre-dawn or sunset summit attempt, Kalsubai has become the trek most Maharashtrian trekkers use to introduce friends and family to hiking for the first time.
