Dzongri is, in effect, the first half of the Goecha La trek packaged as a complete trip in its own right — a six-day route that reaches the same high meadow viewpoint, with its celebrated sunrise views over the Kanchenjunga range, without continuing on to the more demanding and lengthy push to Goecha La itself.
The trail follows the same path through Yuksom, Sachen, and the small village of Tshoka, gaining altitude through rhododendron forest that puts on a particularly vivid bloom each spring. Dzongri Top, a short pre-dawn walk above the main campsite, is the trek’s payoff — a genuinely wide panorama that takes in Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks.
For trekkers with limited time or wanting a gentler introduction to Sikkim’s restricted-area permit system and high-altitude trekking style, Dzongri is the natural starting point, with Goecha La as a logical next trek once more experience is under the belt.
